The Engineering Department manages and secures financial funding for infrastructure projects, which includes roads, bridges, culverts, storm sewers, sanitary sewers, septic systems and waterlines.
Securing funding for infrastructure projects is a top priority. City engineers and staff continuously seek and apply for outside funding sources to lessen the financial burden for the city, residents and local businesses.
The Engineering Department partners with the Army Corps of Engineers, Cleveland Water Department, Cuyahoga County Public Works, Ohio Public Works, Ohio Department of Transportation, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency and Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District for funding assistance in the form of grants, zero-percent loans and low-interest loans to cover infrastructure improvement projects.
Engineering also oversees construction in the public right-of-ways, participates in zoning code enforcement and monitors the enforcement of ordinances that govern grading and drainage on private properties.
The department’s mission is to provide and coordinate city-related engineering services, as well as direct capital-improvement projects, storm-water management projects and environmental improvements that benefit residents, property owners and businesses.
